Behind the scenes, the tool automatically picks one of two upscaling engines based on your source video's resolution, since one approach doesn't make sense across every size of video:

AI model

Used for videos 720p tall or smaller. At these resolutions there's a manageable number of pixels to process, so it's worth running an AI model that reconstructs detail rather than just interpolating between existing pixels — slower per frame, but the source is small enough that it's still practical in a browser.

FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution)

Used for videos taller than 720p. Running a full AI model on a 1080p or larger source would be painfully slow in a browser, so the tool switches to FSR — a much faster upscaling shader that still sharpens the image noticeably, just with a lighter computational cost per frame.

You don't pick the engine yourself — the tool decides based on your source video and shows you which one ran (AI model or FSR) once it's done. What you do choose is the scale factor, 2x or 4x. After processing finishes, a before/after slider lets you drag between the original and upscaled frame directly, rather than just taking a "done" message on faith.

What resolution can you upscale to?

There's no fixed output resolution — it depends on your source video and the scale factor you pick. A 960×540 source at 4x lands at 3840×2160 (4K); the same source at 2x lands at 1920×1080 (Full HD). A 720p (1280×720) source at 2x reaches 2560×1440, and at 4x reaches 5120×2880.

If you're specifically trying to upscale video to 1080p, 2x works well from anything around 540p–960p tall. If the goal is 4K, either run 4x from a smaller source or 2x from something already at or near 1080p. Since output size scales directly with input size and scale factor, a larger source combined with 4x produces a very large output file and takes proportionally longer to process — worth keeping the scale factor practical for what you actually need rather than defaulting to 4x every time.

Browser and hardware performance

Video upscaling is computationally heavy — every frame gets processed individually through either the AI model or the FSR shader, which is a lot more work than simply copying pixels. During testing on a MacBook Air M3 with 16GB of RAM, a few patterns showed up consistently:

  • Shorter clips (a few seconds to a couple of minutes) processed without any issues, at either scale factor.
  • Longer videos made the MacBook Air noticeably warm to the touch — expected, since sustained GPU-heavy work on a fanless laptop generates real heat, not a sign anything was going wrong.
  • Chrome was noticeably faster and smoother than Firefox for the same file during testing, likely down to differences in each browser's WebGPU implementation at the time.
  • Closing unnecessary tabs and other apps before processing a longer video freed up memory and kept things running more smoothly, especially at 4x.

Your own results will depend on your specific hardware, browser, video resolution and length, and how much memory is free at the time — a newer or more powerful machine may handle long 4x jobs without any slowdown at all, while an older laptop with limited RAM may need shorter clips or the 2x setting to stay comfortable. If a longer video feels slow or a browser tab becomes unresponsive, closing other tabs and retrying with fewer things running in the background is the first thing worth trying, and Chrome is worth reaching for if Firefox feels sluggish on a particular file.

Tips for better upscaling results

A few things make a real difference to the final result, beyond just picking a scale factor:

  • Start from the best source you have. Upscaling sharpens and enlarges what's already in the frame — it works with more to work with. A moderately compressed original upscales better than a heavily compressed re-upload of the same clip.
  • Match the scale to your actual need. If 1080p is the target, 2x from a mid-resolution source gets there directly, without the extra processing time and file size that 4x adds for no visible benefit at your target resolution.
  • Check the before/after slider before downloading. It's a quick way to confirm the upscale actually looks better on your specific footage before committing to the file.

Can upscaling really improve video quality?

What it won't do is restore information that was never in the source — heavy compression artifacts, motion blur, or an out-of-focus shot are limitations baked into the original footage, and enlarging the video doesn't undo them. Upscaling increases resolution and file size to make a video look better or fit a higher-resolution requirement.
